Sending to WeChat Pay (China)

Can I send to WeChat Pay with Taptap?

Yes. You can send CNY to a recipient’s WeChat Pay (Weixin) wallet in Mainland China. First-time receipts require a quick setup by the recipient.

Who is eligible to receive? Mainland China citizens (18+) with valid ID; certain travel-permit holders have different transaction limits.

What does my recipient need?

  • A WeChat Pay account in their own name
  • To finish the SMS verification within 48 hours after you send (link expires)
  • To confirm the transaction in WeChat within 48 hours (per transfer)
  • To select the same reason and family relationship you chose and complete any requested personal info or docs

Why? WeChat requires first-time recipients to open an SMS link, confirm details, and choose where to receive (wallet or bank).

What recipient details do I enter in Taptap?

  • Full name in pinyin exactly as registered in WeChat Pay.
  • WeChat ID: mobile number linked to their WeChat Pay.
  • Recipient country: China (pre-filled).

Important: If name/ID don’t match, the transfer will fail or be cancelled and refunded.

Do I need to choose a reason for the transfer?

Yes. Chinese regulations require a purpose. Supported on WeChat: Sending to your family or sending to yourself (Salary payment, Savings)

  • For Family, the recipient may need to confirm the relationship in-app and sometimes upload a document.
  • Sending to your own account? Choose Sending to Self

What happens after I send?

First time receiving on WeChat

  1. The recipient gets an SMS with a unique link (expires in 48h).
  2. They open the link in WeChat and authorize their phone, then choose the receiving method: WeChat Balance or linked bank card.
  3. They complete personal info/consents and confirm the reason/relationship if asked.
  4. Once done, money usually arrives within minutes.

No SMS? They can confirm directly in WeChat: Weihuikuan (微汇款) → Global Remittance → Receive Money via Phone Number.

Already set up? Funds usually arrive within minutes. However, WeChat may ask to verify the transaction again in the app within 48 hours.

How long does it take?

  • Returning recipients: usually minutes.
  • First time: must finish SMS setup within 48h, otherwise WeChat cancels the transaction and we refund you.

How much can I send?

  • Per transfer: up to 50,000 CNY.
  • Annual cap: 800,000 CNY per recipient.
  • Monthly count limits: Up to 15 transfers per month. Monthly counts are cumulative across services (not just Taptap).

Why? Limits are set by WeChat/Chinese regulation and may vary by purpose and recipient category.

Why was my transfer cancelled or delayed?

Common reasons:

  • Recipient didn’t link a Mainland bank card or didn’t finish within 48h
  • Name/WeChat ID/phone don’t match WeChat’s records
  • Reason mismatch or documents were requested but not provided

If cancelled, WeChat auto-refunds after the window expires.

How does my recipient receive the money (wallet vs bank)?

They choose WeChat Balance or a linked bank card during the SMS flow. Both paths require a bound bank card; OTP must work on their phone number.

My transfer failed or is stuck, what should I do?

First, double-check the details you entered

  • Make sure the recipient’s pinyin name and their WeChat ID / linked mobile number match what’s in their WeChat Pay app. If these don’t match, the transfer will fail and be auto-refunded after the window expires.

If it’s their first time receiving, ask them to finish setup

  • The recipient must complete the steps from the SMS link within 48h (link expires). If they didn’t get the SMS, they can confirm directly in WeChat via: Weihuikuan → Global Remittance → Receive Money via Phone Number.

Make sure their WeChat wallet is ready

  • They may need a Mainland bank card linked to WeChat Pay.

Check the reason for transfer

  • WeChat supports sending to family and personal transfers. The sender and recipient must select the same reason; WeChat may ask the recipient to confirm kinship (Family) or provide documents. Missing or mismatched info can cause cancellation.

Confirm limits / eligibility

  • Typical limits include ¥50,000 per transfer, and monthly frequency caps depending on purpose; certain travel-permit holders have lower caps. If a limit is hit, the transfer may be cancelled.

If the link expired or steps weren’t finished

  • WeChat will cancel and refund the transfer automatically once the 48h window passes. You can resend after the recipient completes setup.

Recipient still needs help?

  • Ask the recipient to contact WeChat Customer Support from their app (include screenshots and the WeChat order number starting with “R”).
